Collect and Connect - Resilient South City
In Collect and Connect – Resilient South City, Hassell has collaborated with community and not-for-profit organizations in an extended team approach working towards large-scale environmental sustainability in South San Francisco.
The jury was impressed with the scope of activities and potential outcomes that stemmed from a concept that argued for a shift from “vulnerability into resiliency.” The value of this concept was demonstrated through an approach that formed connections between water, ecology, community and emergency, positioning public space as the keystone. The expanded notion of resiliency allowed for flexible forms of deployment, advocating for long-term incremental changes that activate multiple stakeholders across sites and scales. Resilient South City leads the way in showing how landscape architects can advocate for, empower and collaborate with community to respond to large-scale issues that are affecting many worldwide environments in the context of a climate emergency.
