The redesign of Smithfield Street was inspired by Gympie's history as a gold-producing region. The Street has been successfully reimagined as a pedestrian-friendly 'Eat Street': vacant shops have been tenanted, eateries have embraced al fresco dining, and existing businesses are opening for longer hours. This has been enabled by a supportive public realm with improved lighting, shade, access, furniture and extensive new planting.

An initial series of monthly events has been so popular that additional, more frequent events are now planned. Delivered cost-effectively, Smithfield Street demonstrates that thoughtful design can make a real difference to the life and prosperity of a community.
