The Lily Pads
2019 TAS AWARD OF EXCELLENCE - SMALL PROJECTS
INSPIRING PLACE
The Lily Pads are Inspiring Place’s competition-winning entry to replace the ageing deck over the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens’ famous lily pond as part of the Gardens’ bicentennial celebrations.
Conceived of as over-scaled lily pads, the result is three circular timber decks, which, while meeting the programmatic requirement to hold fifty people, show rare restraint in an important heritage landscape setting.
The jury was impressed by the simple, understated design approach. While the Lily Pads blend seamlessly with their context, they also create a new focal point and meeting place for the Gardens’ many visitors. They are at once contemporary, with their precise timber and steel details, and deeply sympathetic to their historic context. Inspiring Place is commended for creating a unique structural intervention that invites the visitor to engage with a rich cultural and natural landscape in new ways.
